Panhala Hill Station
Panhala is a small city and a hill station of the Kolhapur district of Indian state of Maharashtra. Panhala Hills is located South of Maharashtra State just 20 kms. from the famous city Kolhapur. Kolhapur best known for it's historical Mahalaxmi Temple, Rankala lake, New Palace Mueseum, Town Hall and near by places such as Jotiba Temple, Radhanagri Dam, Dajipur Santuary, Vishalgad, Kalammawadi Dam, Narshimawadi Datta Mandir, Bahubali and also famous for its Leather foot wear, Engineering Industries and Sugar Mills is a small city situated on the  Pune-Bangalore High way.

The verdant hills, the terraced farms and the omnipresent mist bestow Panhala with a unique allure, a mystic. The aerial roots of the banyan trees that flank the road form a beautiful archway, a prelude to the royal remains of the fort to come. Situated at a magnificent height of 3177 feet above sea level, Panhala commands a panoramic and awesome view of the valley below.

Fort Panhala (Marathi: पन्हाळ गड)  or Panhalgad - and The Maratha Empire

The history of Maratha Empire and Maratha King Chattrapatti Shivaji Maharaj, is closely related to Panhala and Panhala Fort. Chattrapatti Shivaji Maharaj spent more than 500 days at Panhala during his childhood.  Panhala was the Maratha state capital until 1782 and in 1827 it became the part of British empire.

Panhala Fort is the largest of all the Deccan forts found in the Sahyadri mountain ranges or on the Western Ghats.

Baji Prabhu Deshpande - also known as Sardar of the Maratha Empire (Marathi: बाजी प्रभू देशपांडे) .

Baji Prabhu Deshpande was a Minister/Count (also known as Statue of Baji Prabhu Despande - was known as The Sardar of the Maratha Empire - A Great Warrior, A Hero of the Maratha Emprie who sacrificed his life for his King and the Country.Sardar) of Chattrapati Shivaji, founder of the Maratha empire. The well celebrated legend of Baji Prabhu is intricately linked with an important rear guard battle enabling Shivaji's escape from Panhala fort; he was the hero who sacrificed his life for his king and country. He was born in Shind village near Bhor. Baji Prabhu Deshpande (died 1660)

Baji Prabhu fought the last battle during Shivaji's escape from Panhala fort, where he played a key role in the final battle.

Panhala is traditionally the residence of Maharishi Parashara. The Karvir Puran mentions Panhala as Pannagalay, a home of serpents.  Maharishi Parashara lived in the Pranlak and  Padmanal caves,

Initially Panhala was the capital of the Shilahara king Bhoja II during 1178-1209 Ad. It was successively held by the Yadava and Bahamani Kings. In 1489 AD, the fort and the territory was taken over by the Adil Shahi dynasty of Bijapur. Shivaji Maharaj seized the fort in 1659 AD. It was from here that Shivaji, when encircled by the forces of Siddi Johar, escaped one rainy night to Vishalgarh. Later, the fort remained with the Marathas, except for a short period in between, when it went to the Mughals. The fort remained with the Kolhapur state till India achieved independence.

The famous Marathi poet Moropanta (1729-94Ad) was bron and brought up at Panhala. There is also the Samadhi of Ramachandra Amatya, the author of Ajnapatra, an important work on statecraft, including for
construction. Today, Panhala is a sort of hill station and provides all the necessary facilities for tourists.

SIGHT SEEING

While at Panhala you must visit Ambarkhana. Ambarkhana was built by the Marathas and housed the administrative section, the palace, the mint, and the granary. Titled Ganga, Jamuna, and Saraswati, the
granaries could store as much as 25,000 khandis of grain. Since the soil was not suitable for agriculture, the provisions had to be stocked. Then there is the Teen Darwaja i.e. the three important gates to gain access to the fort.

Another major attraction at Panhala is the Sajja Kothi that was built by the Mohammedans in 1008 AD. There is a very interesting anecdote attached to this monument. It is said that when Siddi Johar, a formidable Bijapur  General, attacked Panhala, Shivaji tricked the general by escaping from the window of Sajja Kothi while a brave stalwart Shiva Kashid disguised as Shivaji combated the wrath of the general.

Shivaji, a religious devotee, did not undertake any perils without paying obeisance to the goddess. The Ambabai temple stands vigil to this, which is another, must visit at Panhala.
Konkan Darvaja at Panhala Fort, Panhala - Kolhapur - Maharashtra
While at Panhala you may also visit the Sambhaji temple. The Sambhaji temple was built in memory of Sambhaji, the first ruler of Kolhapur.

The Someshwar tank of Panhala too is worth visiting. The tank came into existence due to the quarrying of stones that were required for the construction of the fort wall. There is a very well camouflaged well with a three-storied structure on top, Andhar Bav. This was cloistered to prevent any kind of water poisoning by the enemy.

The Nayakini Sajja at Panhala manifests the intelligent warfare strategy used by the Marathas to dupe the enemies. The Nayakini Sajja has been very strategically located near one of the corners of the fort to conceal a deep ravine in between. When the enemies attacked from that corner, they would actually climb over the make-believe corner of the fort to accede the Nayakini Sajja and in the endeavor fall into the deep ravine.
